Life Story

Janet Gallacher, known as ‘Granny Jazza’, and even as ‘Janet Planet’, as she was on her own planet, and she was born on the 215 of May 1964, born to her parents George and Kathleen Walsh, in the family home in 64 Westmuir Street, Parkhead. Janet will be missed, she will be sorely missed, her family and friends will simply miss everything about her, with them all going to miss her presence and her just being there for them all. Her children will miss her advice over the years, and her shoulder to cry on it it was ever needed, where she was there to offer guidance, and always such a good listener and never judgemental. Everyone will miss Janet being on her own planet, like when in McDonalds and saying ‘What’s this WeeFee’, or when she was talking to Stewart on ‘Skelp’. Then there were the babies that were born blind, and Janet said ‘How can they sleep at night with the light on’, and not to forget when on holiday in Turkey and getting introduced to a new set of baby twins and Janet saying ‘What age is he, and what age is the other one’. The stories could continue forever, but Janet will be remembered for being bubbly, daft, dotey, fun loving and up for a laugh, she was cheery, a joker, and she was so vibrant with her whacky coloured hair and bright clothes, that matched her personality. Janet was kind-hearted, generous, she had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody, she could speak her mind and said it as it was, and with no filter either, she called a spade a spade. She was independent, strong-willed, stubborn, a fighter, determined, and so very selfless, who was more concerned about others than she ever was about herself. But most of all, Janet will be remembered for being a loving, caring and thoughtful Mum, Granny Jazza, Daughter, Sister, Auntie, Sister-in-law, Mother-in-law, and a dear friend, who enjoyed her life, who lived her life to the full, and who will certainly never be forgotten.

Early Years

Janet was raised initially in Parkhead, then in Whyte Avenue, Eastfield, Cambuslang, where she was raised along with her big sister Karen, where she had a happy childhood in a close-knit family who all looked out for one and other, where Janet sorted anybody out that annoyed her family. She was a typical wee lassie growing up, and always outside playing in the open air with her friends and family, playing in the back courts and dykes, skipping, climbing on roofs, and her not minding getting dirty either. Janet and her siblings were often at all the local parks too. amusing themselves in the likes of Tollcross Park, Thorntree, Alexandra Park, and other local parks. Janet and her sister had fun family holidays growing up, with happy memories of Rothesay with all of their cousins, as well as Southport, Torquay, Bridlington and other seaside resorts. She also had her first holiday abroad when as a teenager she went to Rimini in Italy with her family and friend, and she had a brilliant time. Janet went to St Michael’s Primary then Charlotte Street Secondary, where she was clever enough, but she didn’t like school and just wanted to party, so she left just as soon as she could, as she wanted to start earning. On leaving school she first worked in a shoe shop, and she loved it, she then worked as a nursery nurse near Queens Park, and her working with kids with special needs, and she loved these years, before then starting her family.

Family

As a young girl she met a young lad called Stewart Gallacher who came from Fernhill, he was a manager at Sweepers Lounge Bar in Cambuslang, and that’s where they first met, and Stewart drawn to Janet’s good looks and charm. They became an item and were soon engaged, then getting married on the 1st of April 1989 in St Bride’s chapel, Cambuslang with their reception in the Kings Park Hotel, with her dad’s wedding speech memorable as he made a toast to ‘Janet and lan’. They set up home together in Neilvaig Drive, Fernhill, where 2 years later they were blessed with a baby boy that they called Stewart, a further 3 years passed and they were blessed with a baby girl that they called Jemma, and their family then complete. Where Janet was quite simply just an amazing mum who was always there for her young kids, she dedicated her life to them, and was so protective of them. She encouraged her kids in everything that they ever did, and she taught them good manners, gave them good morals and values, taught them good work ethics, and they always came first with her. Janet was the disciplinarian of the family home, and the one to give his weans a skelp on the arse if they ever stepped out of line, but her look and that stare was usually enough for them to toe the line. She was such a hands-on mum and she did so much with her young kids, taking Stewart to his fooball training and his games, and taking Jemma to her dancing and drama classes, and their official taxi driver too. Janet was the cook of the family home, bur she didn’t like cooking, and truth be told she wasn’t the best, and her known to burn pasta, but then again she was too busy gabbing on the phone, although to be fair her mince and totties were decent. Her children had fun family holidays growing up, with fond memories of holidays abroad to the likes of Tenerife, Turkey and Portugal, and great times abroad too. Janet became Granny Jazza, and she couldn’t have been any happier or prouder, she doted on Lucy and Laurie, and loved when in their company, and when not with them she was asking after them. She was strict with them though, and she let them away with nothing, and she often told them off, and the only one that could ever calm them down. Janet was happiest when she was with her family, especially when her grandweans had arrived, her family were her life and her world, and as long as they were in good health and happy then Janet was a happy woman. Janet was happy when socialising with her friends and family over the years, loving a night out with her pals, and loving when everybody joined in, and she hated staying in, with the last 6 months hard for her as she couldn’t get out. Janet enjoyed a family get together back in the day, with her gran’s in Cathkin the family’s regular haunt, with Janet there with her sister and loads of cousins, enjoying xmas dinner and Sunday dinners.

Professional Achievements

Janet was always very sociable, where she lit up a room, was out-going and the life and soul of any night out, with her going to The Sportsman every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night for years, where she would be enjoying a vodka, soda water and lime or her favourite rose wine. In recent years it was The Shipbank that she frequented, where she just loved her karaoke, belting out her favourites, like ‘Bonfire Heart’, ‘Mamma Mia’ or ‘These boots are made for walking’, where she was rank rotten, tone-deaf, and she made the words up to the songs too. When working in the shoe shop, she would go to gay clubs with her bosses and had a great night, then she continued the party back in the house with her kids, although she regularly never got over the front door, with Janet lying against the wall outside pissed, saying ‘I’m comfy here’. Janet had her hobbies and pastimes over the years, where in her youth she was good at hockey and netball when at school, she also played bingo in later years, but she hated it as she got too excited.

Passions & Hobbies

As well as enjoying a sociable night out, she also loved a nice meal, especially a carvery, enjoying The Redburn Farm and Toby carvery, but she loved an Italian just the same, and she didn’t leave until she had finished her wine. Janet enjoyed music, and she had a varied style of music that she enjoyed, from The Bay City Rollers to GBX and dance music, where she once gave Jemma a red neck when she was giving it laldy to dance music on a night out, when Jemma pals clocked her saying ‘There’s your mum’. She enjoyed watching her telly, where she watched soaps, especially Corrie and Emmerdale, she also enjoyed watching Four in a bed, Come dine with me and Place in the sun. Janet enjoyed shopping, she was shopping daft, and especially loved buying new clothes and shoes, then she got into online shopping and loved that too. With her friend and neighbour Stephanie helping her with the online shopping, and also scrubbing her floors and doing her house work for her, and Stephanie her adopted daughter.
